The inaugural #NZreadaloud started in Week 5 of Term 1. There were 9 classes on board and most of us connected via Edmodo.
The book we used was The Ride of the Katipo by Stu Duvall. From the discussions which took place throughout the duration of the read aloud, it seemed like all the students really enjoyed the story.
The read aloud becomes an authentic way to expose learners to new vocabulary… this story is full of wonderful words to dissect with the kids later on…
Visualising is a great way to help kids get meaning from text. What better way to show understanding of a character than to draw a detailed picture! Here is a gorgeous picture drawn of Jack as The Katipo!
Connections were made, questions were discussed, learning was shared. From the feedback I have has…. everyone found it a valuable way to integrate literacy with connecting.
Below is a link to the Storify from some of the discussion and sharing which took place via the slow chat on Twitter.
What a wonderful experience for our learners… making connections with other kids around the country and discussing a book by a New Zealand author.
