About Kerri

I am a learner and a teacher. Having been inspired by many educators whose blogs I have come across on my professional learning journey, I started this blog as a way for me to keep track of things I am learning and reflecting on in my practice.

    • Hi there Amy. FANTASTIC. I will have the Google Form for registering up on the Year 7 / 8 page in the next week…so keep an eye out for the book selection.

      • I am also keen to join, but not sure how the book reading actually works. Do I need to buy multiple copies? Or is it part of the programme that we get access to an electronic copy? Is there any cost?

  1. Hi. I am collaboratively teaching in a Year 3-6 class. I have begun sharing this initiative with my colleague, in the hope that she will be keen to implement alongside me. If not, then I am prepared to have a go with a group(s) on my own 🙂 So how do I go about registering my interest etc, for Term 2 and/or Term 3? Thanks.

    • Hi Deb. The Google Forms for registering will be up by the end of this week. Being in a collaborative space myself, I think it is really important that your co-teacher is on board with #NZreadaloud. You could run as a group I guess but ensure you leave plenty of time for the discussion in Edmodo (Twitter) as well as the learner-led inquiry which comes from reading as well:)
      Look forward to your participation.

  2. Hi I teach a Year 3 class. I’m very interested in joining this programme for term 2. Will there be a form to register during the holidays sometime?
    Many Thanks

  3. Hi there, My name is Kay and I teach in a rural multi level classroom and would love to join you for Term 3. I have a composite class of Year 4 and 5 and the Year 3 children join us in the afternoon. Which book would you suggest we join for? This will be a big learning curve but willing to jump in head first… a great idea.

    • Hi Kay,
We would love you to give #NZreadaloud a go in Term 3. Always keen to support new participants the best we can. As far as which book for you in your situation, I would suggest wait till the team announce the books and make your mind up from there. You know your kids best:) Both the Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 book choices will be up by next week so everyone has time to access the book. I am probably thinking Year 3/4 book for you…but see what the choices are first:)
What you are doing – jumping in head first – is what we all did at one time! So we applaud you for stepping out of the way you have always done things:)
Any other questions, please let us know.

  4. Hi Kerri,
I teach in a special school with 5 yellow and below readers. Would my boys be able to join in with these discussions in a low level group? And start in Term 2 if possible? Is there a cost to this? Are the books electronic or does our school need to purchase them?
    Thanks!!!

    • Kia ora Kelly. I apologise for taking so long to respond to your question … beginning year stuff and all that!
      To answer your questions:
YES YES YES to your boys participating:) #NZreadaloud by its design is inclusive and we endeavour to make it work for all educators and students. Being an Intermediate teacher I am not so familiar with the colour levels but we have books across the year levels so you could keep an eye out for Term 2 book selections and register for the book which wold suit your boys best. Just because kids are Year 3/4 doesn’t mean they can’t study the Year 5 / 6 book – just as an example.
There is no cost – #NZreadaloud is simply an initiative started to connect Kiwi kids with other Kiwi kids reading books by our amazing Kiwi authors.
Some teachers use electronic books – I think most buy them (either their school or personally). I buy most of mine as I feel I am building up my own classroom library by doing this.
Please email me if you have anymore questions or want to discuss your participation:) Always an email away!

    • Hi Cheryl. We are all finalising our selections and I know Jemma (who manages the Year 5/6 #NZreadaloud group) is almost ready to announce. We look forward to having you on board and remember to email or make contact if you have any questions at all:)
